Methalor with the New IG Codex

So some of you may remember my old Methalor Penal Legion army I made for the Macharian Crusade. With the new IG book I decided it was time to revamp and touch up the old guys. The list I made ended up being pretty different in form than my old list, but it seems like a lot of fun.

HQ
Primaris Psyker 70
Primaris Psyker 70

These guys seems like a blast. I load them up in the Valks with some Veterans and they get to blow 4d6 S 6 shots on the flank. If it's a MC or vehicle then they'll re-roll to hit thanks to Bastonne and the 'Take it Down!' order.

Troops
Penal Legion 80
Penal Legion 80
Penal Legion 80

These just seem like a natural choice for this army. The fact that they are stubborn, can outflank, and can roll some really cool abilities just sweetens the deal.

Veterans w/ 3*Meltaguns 100

These guys load up in one of the Valkeries and try to down a vehicle on the flank with their meltas.

Veterans w/ 3* Grenade Launchers, Missle Launcher, Powerfist 115

These guys control my backfield and take pot shots.

Veterans w/ 3*Plasmaguns, Grenadiers, Bastonne 205

These guys hang out with the Psykers, issue orders to themselves, and contest and hold far objectives.

Fast Attack
2*Valkyries w/ 1*multiple rocket pods, 1*Lascannon 245

I suppose these have been explained pretty clearly in the other entries, but I have to give a shout out to the multiple rocket pods, they are awesome.

2*Banewolves w/ Heavy flamer, Smoke Launchers 270
2*Banewolves w/ Heavy flamer, Smoke Launchers 270

These squadrons are really, really killy. In a game Thursday a group of them destroyed a twenty man combined Infantry squad, and today one of the squadrons killed an entire Thousand Sons squad. They do the most damage in the list.

Heavy Support

Demolisher w/ Hull Heavy Bolter, Plasma cannon sponsons 205
Demolisher w/ Hull Lascannon, Multimelta sponsons 210

These guys can do a few things for the list. Foremost they attract alot of fire and are very resilient. They are also this lists main way to kill 2+ armour.

That's it.

Full of Monkey Designs goes on line!

Full of Monkey Designs is a brand new painting service which just went live. I happen to be one of the artists for the service. This post is meant for two things. One, to welcome all my readers and anyone who enjoys my work to also become my client. And two, to announce that this blog will be getting more active in the coming months as I use this site to show in progress commission work. There are a number of artists on the site, with many different styles, so come check it out.

Battleforge Hobby Tournament 4/11

So another month and another tournament at Battleforge Games. This month was the hobby tournament meaning theme and painting were scored more heavily and friendlier lists were suggested. With this in mind I pulled Khor'aeka's Bloody Host off the shelf. It has a strong theme, decent painting, and wasn't overpowered, so I thought it was the right choice. Let's go through it.

Game 1 v. Jwolfs Red Corsairs
At first I thought I was screwed when I heard I was paired up with Jwolf, but then I realized he was not sporting his trusty IG, but instead his Red Corsair army led by Huron Blackheart. It had a strong core of Berserkers, a Lash Sorcerer, Possessed, Terminators, a Defiler, and a couple Oblits. I started off the game by breaking one of my main rules and breaking up my force sending the Crushers and a Bloodthirster to one flank, while the Soulgrinder and a Bloodletter unit went on the other. This was mainly done so that my weaker units were not caught by his Defiler. The Defiler was eventually destroyed by the Bloodthirster, while the rest of my troops rolled through his lines. Full points 22/22.

Game 2 v. Goatboys Fabius Bile CSMs
I was matched with Thomas for the second round, so I was looking forward to a fun game. He took a mounted list based around Fabius Bile accompanied by two Dreadnoughts and two Defilers. My army is somewhat weak against large numbers of walkers, as only the Thirsters and Grinder have high enough S. This meant if they got into combat with my little guys, I'd have to have the big boys to clean up the mess. This worked to some degree, as I did manage to kill both Defilers and one of the dreads, but this meant the majority of his infantry survived. It was a pretty close game, so we decided to call it, good for me because I think he probably could have tabled me. 10/22.
Game 3 v. Josiahs Fallen Angels
For the second Battleforge tournament in a row I was paired against Joisah in the final round, high in the standings. This time he hadn't brought his Fallen Angels as Space Marines, but instead as Chaos. If you hadn't been counting, yes, this is my third game against Chaos Marines (ugh). We were playing Capture and Control as the primary objective. He set up one small troop squad near his objective on one flank, with a Predator and some Havocs supporting. Another squad of Havocs, plus all the rest of his Troops (mounted in Rhinos) set up on the other flank, across from my cornered objective. I attacked his objective agressively, destroying everything save one Rhino. I managed to destroy all his mobile troops from my objective, save one Champion. That champion claimed my objective while his Rhino contested hid own. I got the other two objectives. 8/20.

This score plus my high theme and paint scored meant I got 3rd, edging Josiah by one point, and Jwolf by two.

Battleforge Heavy Tournament 3/14

So I took my Eldar down to a tournament at my local store, Battleforge Games, yesterday. It was the Heavy format, meaning stronger lists were the focus with less emphasis on painting and composition. I hadn't played in a tournament since early January, nor played with my Eldar in even longer. My amry consisted of an Avatar, a Farseer, two large Fire Dragon units in Wave Serpents, a Shadowseer Quin unit, three Avenger units, two Wraithlords, and a Fire Prism. Let's break it down.

Game 1 v. Brandons Tyranids
Brandon was a nice guy I had seen at a few local tournaments (though never a Battleforge one) but we had never played. His army consisted of a Flyrant (really sweet model pictured above), 5 Fexes, a Warrior brood, a Lictor, a couple small Gaunt broods, and three outflanking Genestealer jobs. Primary objective victory points, secondary objective seize and control objectives, tertiary objective kill the highest point enemy unit (one of the heavy fexes for him, a fire prism for me). First turn I forced both Fire Dragons units into his armies teeth and performed a general advance. Turn 2 I was able to kill 3 of his Fexes with Fire Dragons and the concentrated fire of the rest of my army. The Tyrant charged in a killed one of the Dragon units, but was gunned down the next turn. My Avengers were able to kill the Genestealers which got close to them. I ended up tabling him by the top of turn 5. 22/23 points

Game 2 v. Davids Dark Eldar
Game 2 I was on the top table versus David, who I had played a few times before in tournaments. I don't remember the exact composition of his army, but it had something like 26 Dark Lances, a Talos, and a few Wyche squads. Primary objective victory points, secondary objective take the center, and tertiary objective hold the line. David got first turn and managed to destroy both my Fire Dragon Wave Serpents and get a first turn charge with one of his Wyche units on some Avengers. I eventually managed to see them off, with the assistance of the Avatar. The Harlequins killed the Talos, my Fire Prism tank shocked a unit off the board, my Avengers bladestormed a few Warrior squads off the board. I destroyed much more of his army than he did of mine but he had way more scoring units still, so he took the middle, securing him the seconday objective, I got the other. 16/22 points

Game 3 v. Josiahs Space Marines
I have played against Josiah plenty of times and I have to say I was pretty pleased with the last round matchup. His army was Vulkan Hestan, a Terminator Librarian, 2 Thunderhammer Terminator squads, a big scout squad, a Tactical squad in a Rhino, and three Landraiders (one being a Crusader). I figured my Fire Dragons would have a field day with all those Landraiders, but in the end the Dragons didn't kill one of them. Turn 1 my Prism blew away one of the Raiders, leaving Vulkan and a Terminator squad stranded in front of a Dragon Serpent (the other Serpent zoomed in front of the two intact Land Raiders. In his turn Josiah was able to knock down both Serpents with Landraider fire. I killed Vulkan and the Terminators with a bladestorm from the Avengers and the remaining Fire Dragons. A thunderhammer squad charged my Avatar but between being hit on a 5 and having a fortuned 4+ save he was able to weather the storm and wait for the Harlequins to bail him out. The Avatar and Wraithlords managed to walk across the board and smash the other Land Raiders. 19/22 points

In the end that left me one point ahead of Brad (fellow Flylord Bulwark) and his Orks for first place. Thomas aka goatboy placed third with his Nob biker army. So full Flylord placing in the end...
